Your Voice. Your Difference.
Story of my life: I walk into a crowded room. I’m seen yet completely misunderstood.
This story isn’t new. In fact, it’s pretty outdated. I’ve spent the past 30 years of my life showing up in fear. Fear of people. Because people do something that scares me... they judge.
So I stayed quiet. I held back. I didn’t speak.
This story is hard for some people to understand.
Isn’t judgment just a fact of life?
We all judge, don’t we?
We do, but I’m talking a level of judgment that up until the age of the internet and social media only identical twins or public figures could possibly understand the magnitude. While most people receive criticism behind your back, I’ve received direct judgment since the stroller.
I had a protector as a kid. My mom would always shut people down who tried to compare us. She is a fiercely protective woman... and I get a lot of my grit from her. She never wanted the gaze of a stranger to define me.
I became my own avatar, my own protector. I put on a shield and molded to the gaze, to the expectations of society, realizing it would become my life’s work to navigate a world full of misunderstanding.
How did I do that?
Striving for perfection in school.
Conforming as best I could.
Fighting back the haters.
Hiding my emotions behind closed doors.
Looking the part to minimize scrutiny.
Restraining my voice.
Running from people.
This story isn’t new. This story is outdated.
This story just flipped...
To give you a teaser...
I attended a life-changing conference in San Diego: The Rich Litvin Intensive, a gathering of powerful people from all over the world, from all different backgrounds, from all walks of life... and let me tell you all:
I AM UNDERSTOOD.
I say this realizing that it didn’t happen overnight. This Intensive was a reflection of the real world. I found myself resorting to old patterns of self-restraint, protection, resistance, silence... and it was the best gift.
I got to look in the mirror and examine my fears. I had 72 hours of accelerated personal development. And I made a choice to step over the line... and let the DREAM win.
Rich modeled for me the type of space that I want to create in the world. A safe space for self-expression, where courageous leaders are invited to share our stories: to be seen, to be heard, and to be included for all parts of who we are. I put it all out there on the very last day of the conference because I know that my power to share is why I’m here.
I’m here to Impact lives through the power of conversation, and together create a more understanding world.
I share now knowing that my story is your story; being a mirror for you to see yourself is a part of my gift.
I am ready to play at a higher level, and I invite you to play too. Follow Higher Playbook to be a part of my community.
It’s up to you to ask for what you want.
It’s up to you to express yourself freely.
It’s up to you to let your DREAM win.
